Uh, No, He's Not
“Nelson Mandela. He's dead.”
Thanks, President Bush. I'm sure Mr. Mandela will be thrilled to hear that.

Better to be presumed dead in error, than proven brain-dead in fact.
I am convinced more than ever that Bush has started drinking again. I can't wait for that man to be out of office.
Hey there--
I'm not a Bush supporter, but I will defend him here. He was not referring to Mandela actually being dead; instead, he was speaking figuratively about an "Iraqi Mandela" who might rise to the occasion to improve the political and social climate of Iraq. A careful listening and/or reading of his comments yesterday will bear this out.
You know, I was going to cut him some slack, but if you actually watch the video instead of just reading the text of it, you'll see that he's backtracking either on realizing he was wrong in what he said, or that he utterly fucked up the allusion he was going for. There was far too much of a pause after "Mandela is dead." Before he started himming and hawing about "Iraqi Mandela's".
If he wasn't such a literalist about everything else, with his "folksy", "down to earth", "tell it like it is" charm, I'd be the first to defend him.
But he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt anymore.
